Keynote: The liquid crystalline collagen continuum theory of acupuncture and the clinical applications in veterinary acupuncture practice
Time : 9:30
Biography:
Abstract:
The understanding of Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) and Traditional Asian Medicine (TAM) theories offers veterinarians a wealth of appreciation and knowledge of how acupuncture works based on a long history of evidence-based medicine in Asia through nature and naturally occurring phenomena. Western, conventional human medicine and veterinary medicine both emphasize, however, the need for a western medical understanding and “scientific” proof of how acupuncture works as well as the anatomy of acupuncture points and pathways. We need to, therefore, continue to pursue research and understanding based on western neurophysiologic and anatomic studies as well.
Dr. Mae-Won Ho's Liquid Crystalline Collagen Continuum Theory (LCCC) of acupuncture and realized that it connected all the other theories on the classic TCM into a cohesive, practical explanation of the scientific basis of acupuncture. As we entered into the 21st century, there has been increased research documenting the LCCC Theory and fascia-based acupuncture theory.
The LCCC Theory offers a greater appreciation of the value of TCM theories: Five Element Theory and Eight Principle Theory. Scientific research has documented many of these effects and the LCCC theory weaves together the TCM principles with western medical theories. The western medical theories, such as the gate theory and multiple gate theory, vascular and neuroanatomical theory, autonomic theories, humeral mechanisms theory, and the bioelectric theories, can all be interconnected and understood more clearly based on the LCCC Theory. The bioelectric theory of acupuncture can be explained now based on the LCCC Theory.
This paper offers a roadmap to incorporating all previous scientific theories of acupuncture into the LCCC. Then, based on new findings on fascia’s electro-conductivity, HeartMath and research in quantum physics we can gain an appreciation of the interconnectedness of all human and animal interactions and their implications in veterinary acupuncture practice.
We began this journey realizing that acupoints, acupuncture meridians and pathways are based on a bioelectrical field that connects the entire body through the liquid crystalline collagen continuum (LCCC). Research in interdisciplinary fields of the new physics, biomedical research, new biology, HeartMath and quantum theories then begin to document that our LCCC may electromagnetically impact on other living beings and their LCCC. This can then extend to a perspective that we are all living in an interactive, biodynamic field that impacts all of us and that we can have an impact on. That begs the question of what impact we wish to have on others and how we can develop ourselves to have a more positive impact on others. If we are all intimately connected, then is there anyone other than ourselves? Is there other? Are we truly all one as ancient teachings share? This is a question worthwhile to consider for our veterinary practice and personal lives. It may be one way to address the stress-related challenges we face in veterinary medicine that the AVMA acknowledges and is beginning to address. It is empowering to realize that the solution lies within ourselves, via HeartMath and the LCCC. It all comes from within ourselves and expands out from there to all others.
This paper presents the evolution of veterinary acupuncture theory from TCM and TAM through what was known in the late 20th century regarding the scientific basis of acupuncture based on the gate theory, neurovascular theories, and neurohormonal theories as well as the bioelectric theories. As research continues in the 21st century, the LCCC Theory has been able to incorporate all the previous theories into a more cohesive and comprehensive explanation of the scientific basis of acupuncture. The implications and clinical applications of the LCCC Theory in veterinary medicine have been explored based on the integration of QT, the new physics, new biology, HeartMath studies and other interdisciplinary studies.

Tara Miller
Gonzaga University, Canada
Title: The nervous system always wins: How the neuroscience of Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT) trumps talk therapy in treating trauma and overwhelm through mind-body applications to nervous system regulation
Time : 10:30
Biography:
Tara Miller has completed her Masters in Counselling from Gonzaga University. Combining her graduate school training with post graduate, advanced certification in Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT) from the Canadian Foundation for Trauma Research and Education (CFTRE), Tara runs a private practice in Kelowna, BC while writing, speaking, and teaching to other therapists and health related audiences across North America. Her recent case study published in the June, 2017 edition of the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine highlights the efficacy of SRT in treating complex trauma and concurrent disorders for long term resiliency and health. Tara is invited to speak on chronic pain and the brain, athletic performance, holistic mood regulation and more by complementary health experts; guest lectures on SRT to graduate school classes of future counselors, and assists the CFTRE in training programs for SRT. She is currently creating online resiliency based programs for Postpartum Depression, Child and Youth, and Entrepreneurs based in neuroplasticity and brain science principles.
Abstract:
What if there was a way to treat traumatic and overwhelming experiences without flooding the patient, re-living the trauma, or re-firing up previously wired neural pathways? When you can’t outthink your own thoughts no matter how smart or well-read you are, when changing behaviour doesn’t change how you feel, when traditional therapy feels infantilizing and artificial and at least ineffective.
Where talk therapy and CBT has been gold standard historically, they have also been limited in allowing a complete healing of overwhelming events. Often causing dissociation or creating long term dependency on therapy for a supportive relationship that is symptom focused but never resolved. Now, advances in neuroscience and what we know about how the brain is impacted by trauma and overwhelm, and how it heals from it, have created a new science in mental health treatment. One that allows a patient to feel in control and doesn’t toss them into sympathetic arousal. Developed over the past 20 years as informed by pioneers in the field including Allan Schore, Peter Levine, Robert Scaer, Robert Post, Stephen Porges, and more...SRT takes the best of brain science combined with knowledge of the nervous system as governed by the reptilian brain to create a non-overwhelming, mind-body integrated therapeutic modality that creates new neural pathways in the brain to rebuild resilience and overall health.
My presentation includes examples from my published case study on treating complex trauma with SRT along with the fundamentals of SRT and applicable uses and considerations for not just therapists, first responders, medical personnel, body workers, and others in alternative medicine practices. Learning how to track activation in the nervous system as well as how to dissipate it using the felt sense - the language of the nervous system - are translated into understandable metaphors and applications of mind-body integration that are non-overwhelming and effective. SRT focuses on healing the root cause of activation, completing thwarted fight/flight/freeze cycles, and can concurrently resolve developmental ruptures. With this we see expedited improvements, improved resiliency, shorter need for therapeutic interventions, and a greater resolution of symptoms through the act of creating new neural pathways that wire and fire together in resourced ways that help the patient move beyond their history of events or diagnoses, often with a reduction or eliminated need for medication, and into fullness and joy in their lives. SRT has promising results in treating not just complex trauma and concurrent disorders, but also, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, autoimmune disease, asthma/allergies, medical/dental procedures, insomnia, migraine, motor vehicle accidents, relational trauma/assault and more.

Abstract:
In the present investigation, radon-222, radium-226, and uranium-238 concentration have been determined by SSNTD (LR-115 type 2) technique and evaluation of risk of an excess cancer fatality per million person (RECFPMP) due to ingestion of these radionuclides in medical drugs (Solid, Ointment and Solution) derived from medicinal plants in Iraqi pharmacies. The average value of RECFPMP in Solid, Ointment and Solution of drugs samples has been found
0.21, 0.15, and 0.27 respectively. Total annual average internal effective dose (AAIED) due to ingestion of 222Rn, 226Ra, and 238U in Solid, Ointment and Solution of drugs samples under study has been found 55.07 nSv/y, 39.26 nSv/y, and 69.48 nSv/y respectively. The value of AAIED and RECFPMP are value is much smaller than the ICRP1995 and ICRP 1993 recommended
safety limit for the public respectively. So, the intake of the studied samples of medical drugs in Iraq does due to alpha particles (Radon, Radium, and Uranium) not lead to substantial changes in the internal effective dose.

Dr Seidman is an international teacher and lecturer and was awarded A Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine degree by Five Branches University in San Jose, CA. Seidman is the author of several books about Hunyuan Fertility, Hunyuan Heart method and history of Chinese medicine
Abstract:
Infertility is a common problem effecting 15% of couple in the USA. Advanced Reproductive Technologies, ART, provide help to many couples but at the same time fails for many others leaving numerous couples without an answer.
Hunyuan fertility is a method derived from ancient Chinese medicine. In its core is the exploration and development of an embryo’s pivot, the recharging and unification ability of life at its onset. In addition, Hunyuan medicine incorporates practical methods to improve the life ability of the embryo by supporting and developing the unification and recharging ability of the mother and father.
In the past 10 years modern medicine has developed a number of cutting edge technologies, such as assisted hatching and cryopreservation assisting reproductive medicine and yet the overall success rate failed to increase compared to a decade ago. Hunyuan Fertility medicine fulfils a gap in understanding the life within the embryo and how to use simple herbs, acupuncture, exercise and meditation techniques to improve the outcome.
Through the research done in Hunyuan fertility medicine and the accumulated experience regarding unification and recharging it is hoped to integrate newly unexplored areas with ART in order to increase success for the patient.

Title: Physical observation for nutritional deficiencies
Biography:
Keri Brown received her doctorate (ND) Degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA in 1998 and has successfully integrated nutritional, emotional, and structural therapeutics into a unique health approach. She is a founding member of Sojourns Non- Profit Community Clinic in Vermont, owner of Tallas Heath in Colorado, author, speaker, and entrepreneur. She focuses on utilizing holistic health information, cutting edge techniques, and common sense to support and inspire transitions in health. For over 30 years, Dr. Brown has been exploring and integrating the balance of nature, healing, science, and meditation
Abstract:
Physical Observation for Nutritional Deficiencies: Learning how to observe physical features can help one determine nutritional deficiency patterns and health needs prior to disease occurring. This information is imperative in today's health care and in the "sub-clinical" patient, before disease progresses to outright symptoms and blood changes. Traditional doctors used physical observations of our body to confirm our health issues. They did not and could not rely on testing or blood work. Physical observations enable one to take the guess work out of nutritional deficiencies and organ health patterns. This class insures a measurement of patient evaluation as a critical tool in the medical toolbox. If pre-and post-nutritional evaluations and sound patient observations are added, the practitioner can confirm the findings while creating a recordable and even visual benchmark for patients to see the change and progress. This approach heightens the practitioner's ability to identify root causes, target priorities, and integrate patient interaction, while improving understanding, retention and compliance. Using functional assessments of the digestive system, thyroid, adrenals, and more, the health and direction of care becomes more obvious to see, treat, and monitor. While correlating specific observations and testing procedures, one can determine organ health, utilization of nutritional factors, and what direction is best for the client. We will look at the tongue, face, nails, reflex points, simple office testing procedures and holistic care to determine how to help our patients through physical observations for nutritional deficiencies.

Abstract:
Oxidative stress-related and infectious diseases (OSD and IDs) especially those due to multi-drug resistant bacterial strains (MRBS) are almost incurable globally. Apart from the challenges posed by MRBS to synthetic drugs, antibiotics exhibit side effects. There is dearth of information of chemical composition of most plants such as Crassula multicava leaf claimed effective by traditional health practitioners in management of OSD & IDs including diabetes, cancers, tuberculosis, and HIV in Africa. We aimed to investigate the bioactive metabolites of C. multicava from n-hexane, methanol and volatile oil extracts (NHE, MNE & VOE). The hydrodistilled VOE was characterized by GC-MS and Kovat’s index; antibacterial, antioxidant and cytotoxic extracts effects were examined by micro-dilution, spectrophotometric and haemolytic techniques respectively. The VOE was bactericidal against three out of the five reference bacterial strains (BS) and one confirmed MRBS at < 0.030mg/mL including Staphylococcus aureus NCIB 50080, Listeria ivanovii ATCC19119. The NHE minimum bactericidal concentration was > 0.35mg/mL against test BS, except for L. ivanovii at 0.25mg/mL, while MNE was bacteriostatic at 0.40 mg/mL on test BS linked to IDs. The IC50 of 0.12mg/mL for VOE was the best, compared to NHE and MNE (0.40 and 0.96mg/mL respectively) in reducing lipid radical associated with OSD. Behenyl alcohol (20.25%), linoleic acid (10.83%) and 2,3,4,6-tetramethyl phenol (8.74%) were the major secondary metaboliteis. None of the extracts was toxic at < 0.75mg/mL. The study indicates that the VO of C. multicava contained potent metabolites, noteworthy bioactivities, useful as natural medicine, food preservative and antimicrobial agent.

Title: Standards of practice for holistic nursing and medicine
Biography:
Abstract:
The Standards of Holistic Nursing Practice were developed by the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) as a public statement regarding the practice of holistic nursing as a specialty. The Standards developed from an interest in describing holistic nursing, and in articulating the values, knowledge, and skills required for its practice. Since holistic nursing recognizes the body-mind-spirit connection of persons, holistic nurses often practice complementary/alternative modalities. Holistic nursing embraces all nursing practice that has improvement of healing the whole person from birth to death as its goal. Practicing holistic nursing requires nurses to integrate self-care, self-responsibility, spirituality, and reflection in their lives. The holistic nurse is an instrument of healing and a facilitator in the healing process. Holistic nurses honor the individual's subjective experience about health, health beliefs, and values.
Holistic medicine is a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health. Holistic medicine means consideration of the complete person, physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually, in the management and prevention of disease. It is underpinned by the concept that there is a link between our physical health and our more general 'well-being'. In an holistic approach to medicine, there is the belief that our well-being relies not just on what is going on in our body physically in terms of illness or disease, but also on the close inter-relation of this with our psychological, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental state. These different states can be equally important. They should be managed together so that a person is treated as a whole. In fact some feel that the word holistic should really be spelt 'wholistic.
This Paper reviews the development of the practice standards, and provides information on the development and use of the Standards to present insights into the philosophy, values, knowledge, and skills on which holistic care is based, as well as to illustrate the relationship of alternative modalities to these standards.

The inflammatory reaction is readily produced in rats in the form of paw oedema with the help of irritants. Carrageenan induced paw oedema is most commonly used method in experimental pharmacology. The rats of treated Group II, III, IV and V were administered orally with Ibuprofen soln, Panchkatu 125mg/KgBody wt, Panchkatu 250mg/KgBody wt, Panchkatu 500mg/KgBody wt, respectively one hour before injecting 1% w/v suspension of carrageenan (0.1 ml) into the sub plantar region of left hind paw of all the five groups. Paw volume of all 20 rats were measured soon after injecting carrageenan. The volume was again measured after 1, 2, 3, 4 & 24 hrs in all the five groups of rats. The change in paw volume of Group I was compared with Group II, III, IV & V Group. Also the treated Group II, III, IV, V were also compared in between and expressed as percentage oedema inhibition by the drug.
Results of the present study are based on the oedema of hind paw of rats of all five groups measured after 1hr, 2hrs, 3hrs, 4hrs and 24hrs after carrageenan injection.
After one hr of carrageenin Inj Both Trial group Panchkatu 125mg/Kg and Panchkatu 250mg/Kg have equal percent inhibition of oedema as with Standard group (Ibuprofen) that is 42.2% while last group (Panchkatu 500mg/kg) has higher percent inhibition of oedema(50 %) than standard (Ibuprofen) (42.2%).
After two Hrs of carrageenin inj there is increase in Percent inhibition of oedema with increase in dosage of trial drug that is Panchkatu 125 mg/Kg has 27.19% , Panchkatu 250 mg/Kg has 31.49% and Panchkatu 500mg/kg has 56.69% inhibition higher than Standard (Ibuprofen) 47.24%.
After three hrs of Carrageenin inj there is increase in Percent inhibition of oedema with increase in dosage of trial drug that is Panchkatu 125 mg/Kg has 20% , Panchkatu 250 mg/Kg has 21.42% and Panchkatu 500mg/kg has 41.42% inhibition higher than Standard (Ibuprofen) 39.28%.
After four hrs of Carrageenin inj there is again increase in Percent inhibition of oedema with increase in dosage of trial drug that is Panchkatu 125 mg/Kg has25.38% , Panchkatu 250 mg/Kg has 29.22% and Panchkatu 500mg/kg has 40.76% inhibition higher than Standard (Ibuprofen) 38.46%.
After twenty four hrs of carrageenin inj there is again increase in Percent inhibition of oedema with increase in dosage of trial drug that is Panchkatu 125 mg/Kg has 3.22%,Panchkatu 250 mg/Kg has 19.35% and Panchkatu 500mg/kg has 27.41% inhibition again higher than Standard (Ibuprofen) 3.22%.
The maximum activity of all trial Groups were observed during first and second hr. and the results are significant ( P <0.005) and are comparable to standard Ibuprofen. Highest percentage oedema Inhibition was seen after 1 & 2 Hrs. Summarizing the above it is concluded that Panchkatu has showed its extreme utility or significance on the inflammation probably because of its excellent activity of inhibiting the both early released and late released mediators which is rarely seen in any anti inflammatory formulation

Abstract:
Teucrium polium L. var. gnaphalodes (family Lamiaceae), a wild-growing flowering plant, is one of the 340 species of the genus Teucrium and is mainly found in South-Western Asia, Europe and North Africa. In Iran, this medicinal herb, called Kalpoureh, is widely distributed and has been used in traditional medicine for treating different diseases such as abdominal pain, indigestion, common cold and type 2 diabetes. Different classes of compounds have been isolated from various parts of T.polium of which the main groups are terpenoids and flavonoids. Since no phytochemical study has been reported of T.polium var. gnaphalodes, in this research we isolated and identified the most important substances of the aerial parts of this plant. Thin layer chromatography and column chromatography were used to isolate constituents. 1D and 2D NMR experiments were used to determine the chemical structures of the isolated compounds. The discussion about the structure is based on the spectra achieved by NMR (13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, COSY, HSQC and HMBC). Finally, 4 known phenolic compounds were identified: 1- Isorhoifolin 2- Jaranol 3- Poliumoside 4- Verbascoside

Abstract:
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to decrease CVL infections in tertiary care hospital oncology unit
Introduction: Catheters are the leading source of bloodstream infections for patient receiving chemotherapy or other long term treatment. Comprehensive unit-based programs have proven to be effective in decreasing catheter-related bloodstream infections. Central venous catheters (CVL)or central lines (defined as a vascular infusion device that terminates at or close to the heart or in one of the great vessels) are used in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings to provide long-term venous access for patients with a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. A CVL is a long, soft, thin, flexible tube that is inserted into one of the large veins leading to the heart.
Methods/Discussion:
Design: Pre intervention and post intervention observational study.
Setting: The 31 bed medical & oncology unit in a tertiary care hospital.
Between February 2014 and Auguest201, all patients admitted to the medical with CVL were surveyed prospectively for the development of catheter-associated bloodstream infection.
A mandatory education program directed toward Medical & oncology unit nurses was developed by Clinical nurse instructor to highlight correct practices for the prevention of catheter-associated bloodstream infection. The program consisted of a unit in-service session including pre and post test based Presentations on risk factors and practice modifications involved in catheter-related bloodstream infections. Each participant was required to complete a pretest before Presentation and an identical test after completion of the Presentation
Findings/Results:
A fifteen episode of catheter-associated bloodstream infection occurred out of 50 catheters insertion in the 6 months before the introduction of the education program. Following implementation of the intervention, the rate of catheter-associated bloodstream infection decreased to 5 episodes out of 20 catheter insertion in the 6 months after the initiation of the education program.
Conclusion:
An intervention focused on the education of health-care providers on the prevention of catheterassociated bloodstream infections may lead to decrease in the incidence of primary bloodstream infections.

Abstract:
Background & aims: Musculoskeletal disorders have been the largest single cause of work-related illness in the world. While definite therapy has proven to be effective, it is not always favourable due to its adverse events. Ergo, effective yet beneficial alternative medicine would be beneficial. Gua Sha, has been postulated to alleviate musculoskeletal pain. The aim of this study is to review the effectiveness of Gua Sha in treating musculoskeletal pain.
Methods: A systematic computer-based literature search was done on June 2017 using five electronic databases, including Medline, Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane and Science Direct. The keywords used in this literature review are “Gua Sha” and “musculoskeletal pain”, and the synonyms of the aforementioned terms.
Results: Two RCT written by Braun M, et al, and Lauche R, et al were chosen because the two studies focused on assessing the effectiveness of Gua Sha in treating musculoskeletal pain. Braun M, et al, reported that there was a significant decrease of pain intensity in both Gua Sha and control group at day 7, from 61.3 ± 14.0 mm to 22.2 ± 22.3 mm and 58.3 ± 16.2 mm to 50.3 ± 23.4 mm, respectively. This was in accordance to Lauche R, et al in which they found a significant improvement after Gua Sha therapy was given with VAS reduced from 4.3 ± 1.7 cm to 3.0 ± 2.2 cm in TG and 5.2 ± 1.6 cm to 5.1 ± 1.4 cm in WLC group.
Conclusion: Gua Sha was found to be effective on decreasing pain intensity in patients with musculoskeletal pain, particularly neck pain. No adverse events had been reported hence Gua Sha may be applied as alternative solution.

Abstract:
Hypertension has been the leading risk factor to various cardiovascular diseases. Worldwide, more than one in six people suffer from hypertension. Theory had suggested that black tea, a very popular beverage around the globe, has a positive effect for cardiovascular protection and can reduce blood pressure. Thus, this report focuses on the effect of black tea consumption on blood pressure. Internet-based literature search was done through three electronic databases (Ovid Medline, PubMed, and EBSCOHost. Using the keyword “black tea” and “hypertension”, applying various filters and reviewing the abstract, 2 promising studies were used in this report. One meta-analysis by Liu, et al showed that long-term consumption of black tea significantly reduces the mean average of systolic and diastolic BP. Similar result was also reported by Grassi, et al that stated that intake of two glasses of black tea for eight consecutive days reduces the BP. Black tea had significantly reduces the BP and can be recommended to hypertensive patient. However, consumption of black tea cannot replace anti-hypertensive drug due to its small effect.
